Qu‘ est-ce qu'un intellectuel protestant entre 1870 et 1940 ?

RÉSUMÉ
Cet article commence par définir ce qu'est un "protestant" et ce qu'est un "intellectuel". Puis il s'attache à retracer la démarche d'un certain nombre d'intellectuels protestants en deux temps, avant et après 1914. Pour chacune de ces périodes il présente les lieux d'expression des intellectuels protestants, les principales figures et, enfin, il retrace leurs thèmes de réflexions. Cela lui permet de proposer une sorte de "type idéal" de l'intellectuel protestant durant les années 1870-1914 ; pour les années 1914-1940 l'image de ces intellectuels est plus éclatée puisqu'ils se voient dans l'obligation de repenser leur place dans une société destabilisée par la guerre.

SUMMARY
The article begins with definitions of "Protestant" and of "intellectual". It then traces the activities of a certain numbers of Protestant intellectuals in two periods, before and after 1914. For each of these periods, the channels of communication used by Protestant intellectuals, the leading figures and, finally, the major intellectual preoccupations are presented. What emerges is a sort of "ideal type" of Protestant intellectual during the period 1870-1914 ; for the Years 1914-1940 the image of the intellectuals is more diversified, since they find themselves obliged to rethink their place within a French society destabilized by the war.
